Finally, March has arrived! And, so has Shamrock Shake season!! The frosty green shake has inspired a devoted, cult-like following.
Did you know that the shake was first developed in 1970, according to McDonald’s? Although, the shake’s major breakout didn’t occur until 1975. According to the McDonald’s website, “it all began with a little girl, a football team, and a visionary doctor.” Philadelphia Eagles tight end Fred Hill’s daughter was diagnosed with leukemia and began treatment at a local hospital. The Hill Family saw many families at the hospital camping out on hospital benches and waiting rooms, having traveled long distances and not being able to afford hotel rooms. So, Fred and his teammates rallied to raise funds. The Philadelphia Eagles joined forces with McDonald’s to promote the Shamrock Shake. After all, it was green like the Eagles’ uniforms! Enough funds were raised to buy a four-story house, which became the first Ronald McDonald House. Today, there are 365 Ronald McDonald Houses in 42 countries and regions!
This year, McDonald’s has rolled out four new Shamrock Shake flavors: a Chocolate Shamrock Shake, Shamrock Chocolate Chip Frappe, Shamrock Mocha, and Shamrock Hot Chocolate! Better hurry, they won’t last long!
